January 21, 2015
Thank you to everyone who either helped make last Friday’s Event Center opening happen or attended any of the events and games. All reports are that it a special day. Now that the EC is open, please remember that we have big games coming up this Friday and Saturday in the building (attendance in FREE) and our student-athletes would welcome and appreciate your support. We’re in the middle of conference play now where every game is important and both the women’s and men’s teams are 3-2 and in the thick of the league race. Also, coming soon is the beginning of our spring sports seasons with baseball, softball and both tennis teams already in preparation for an exciting 2015 year.
Here’s a quick recap of the action from the last week:
MEN’S BASKETBALL: went 2-1 in the new Stephens Family Arena. Defeated TLU on opening night, 77-72, lost to Southwestern (54-74) and beat Trinity last night, 81-66. Sophomore Jared Thompson has averaged 13.5 points and six rebounds over the last two games and senior Charlie Nunez has contributed 12 points per night. In last night’s win, SU scored 51 points in the second half to turn a three point halftime lead into a comfortable conference win against an always-dangerous Tiger team. After this weekend, the Mountaineers will have reached the midway point of the SCAC schedule and Friday and Saturday’s opponents were picked as preseason favorites.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: went 1-2 in their new home, facing three of the league’s top teams over the span. Lost to TLU on Friday, but responded with their best half of basketball all year in Saturday’s big win over Southwestern. Lost to 13-3 Trinity last night. In the win, SU shot 52% from the field in the second period and rallied from a three point deficit at halftime. Sophomore Sabriyyah Fennell and junior Kelsie Jackson each had 15 points in the game with Fennell pulling down eight rebounds. Senior Brooke Sanders had nine points, three assists and three rebounds to help the cause.
