Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
March 11, 2015

Congratulations to freshman Sydney Christopher of Schreiner Softball for being named SCAC Offensive Player of the Week.  All she did in her opening weekend of her first year was go 11-for-18 with 11 RBI and five doubles.

Weather continues to be an issue with winter refusing to go away.  Coaches have had to make a lot of changes in schedules to try to be creative in fitting in contests. We try to keep the website updated so if weather looks iffy, please check with the site on game times.  On example is that today our softball team will be playing an hastily rescheduled doubleheader with Howard Payne at Mountaineer Field at 2:00 pm.

Here is a look back at last weekend’s action:

SOFTBALL:  first year head coach Amy Meyer and her squad took three of four games against SCAC foe Centenary.  On Saturday, SU won the opener 10-2, and then rallied from a 6-2 deficit in the bottom of the seventh to score five times for a thrilling 7-6 walkoff win.  On Sunday, the Ladies won the first game 10-8 but SU won the finale, 11-6.  The Mountaineer offense scored 36 runs in the four-game series.  In addition to Christopher’s success, sophomore Nichole Schoenherr went 8-for-13 and sophomore Sam Hernandez was 6-for-12 with five runs scored.

WOMEN’S TENNIS:  won three of four matches on a swing through east Texas and western Louisiana.  Lost to UT-Tyler, 1-8, and then rolled to wins over East Texas Baptist (6-1), Centenary (8-1) and LSU-Shreveport (9-0).  The Centenary win improves the team’s record to 2-0 in SCAC play.   Junior Leanna Haynes, sophomores Alex Wheeler and Camila Anguiano and freshmen Abby Knedlik and Samantha Sterling all posted 6-0, 6-0 wins on Saturday.  Both tennis teams next head out to Oregon for their spring break trip.

MEN’S TENNIS:  went 1-2 on their trip to north this past weekend.  Lost to #20 UT-Tyler and at East Texas Baptist before cruising to a 9-0 win at Centenary.  The win evens SU’s record to 1-1 in the SCAC.   Senior Stephen Rogers, junior Teg Lozano and freshman Michael Holder each won their matches against the Gents without dropping a game.  So did all three doubles teams.  Freshman Nick Pena and senior Austin Carrola were nearly perfect, losing just one game each in their respective singles matches and junior Christian Casillas only lost two games.

BASEBALL:  lost a three-game series with #11 ranked Trinity but the Mountaineers played the Tigers tough all weekend.  The Schreiner pitching staff flashed the potential that the unit has against a very tough opponent.  In the first game, freshman Jayme Kidder continued to impress, going all seven innings and allowing just three earned runs in a 4-1 loss.  On Saturday, sophomore Hayden Ray showed his freshman form, going five innings and allowing just two runs.   Freshman Dillon Brown looked terrific as well in his three innings of work.  He gave up just one run.  Junior Blake Rowan pitched the final inning and didn’t allow an earned run.  In the finale, errors proved costly, but junior Charlie Stewart performed well again.  Junior Ryan Martin continues to do well in relief.
