Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
March 25, 2015

First, there will be a special recognition event for U.S. veterans before tonight’s Schreiner Softball doubleheader with George Fox.  The games start at 5:00 pm but there will be a recognition of local veterans starting at 4:50 pm at the Mountaineer Softball Field.  Come out and support our local veterans and our Schreiner softball team!

It was a busy break for our student-athletes.  Here is a quick rundown of the action that took place here and from around the region.

MEN’S TENNIS:  went 3-1 over the past 10 days.  After dropping the first match of their Oregon trip during the break, the Mountaineers scored a 5-4 win at Linfield, a 6-3 win at Willamette and a 9-0 win at Howard Payne.   Seniors Austin Carrola and Stephen Rogers as well as junior Josh Ramirez led the way.  Each posted a 6-0, 6-0 win yesterday at HPU in singles play.   Freshmen Dayton Hancock and Michael Holder only lost one game each in their singles matches.

WOMEN’S TENNIS:  matched the men’s team with a 3-1 record.  Suffered a loss at Linfield but that was sandwiched by a 5-4 win at George Fox and a 7-2 win at Willamette and then soundly defeated Howard Payne on the road, 9-0, yesterday.   For the program, it was their 10th win of the season and this marks the third straight year that SU has posted double-digit wins.  The first time in many, many years that the program has had that level of sustained success.

MEN’S GOLF:  the sixth-ranked Mountaineers kept their spring record perfect with their third win in three tries.  Yesterday, SU was able to successful defend its title at the UTD Spring Classic with a six-stroke win over #14 Texas Lutheran.  19th-ranked Concordia was 23 strokes back and four other teams also were in the field.  Senior Cheyne Kendall shot the day’s low round of 72 in windy conditions to place second overall.  Sophomore Matt McClung overcame illness to finish third, one stroke back.

BASEBALL:  went 1-5 over the break.  SU defeated the University of Dallas in the first SCAC contest of the year, 7-4.  As he has all year, freshman Jayme Kidder kept the game a low-scoring affair from the hill.  He tossed seven innings, allowing just two runs.   Sophomore Connor Ver Schuur had two hits as did freshman Sam Pistrui.  Pistrui and junior Brad Holmes each had two RBI in the win.

SOFTBALL:  although the team lost all 10 games played over the break, SU posted a couple of really strong outings.  Last Wednesday, Schreiner suffered a tough 1-0 loss to NAIA (scholarship) Our Lady of the Lake.  On Monday, the team took a 1-0 lead over defending-conference champion TLU into the bottom of the seventh only to lose in a 2-1 walkoff.
