Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
October 1, 2015

It will be a big weekend campus wide with our annual Parent’s Weekend schedule of events.  It was also be another busy weekend for Schreiner sports teams as our fall sports as well with home matches in men’s and women’s soccer both on Friday and Sunday afternoon.  Before getting into the team recaps and schedule for the week ahead, a quick congratulations to freshmen Kena Cox of Schreiner Women’s Golf.  Kena tied the school freshman scoring record in her first collegiate tournament and was named Co-Golfer of the Week after shooting 83-75 earlier this week.

Here’s a quick recap of last week’s action:

WOMEN’S SOCCER:  head coach Nick Morrison’s squad went 2-0 last weekend in SCAC play, defeating Austin College, 2-0, and then beating Centenary, 3-0.  SU has won three straight heading into key matches this weekend.   Freshman Kyli Harvey and sophomore Heidi Workmon scored the goals in the AC match and Harvey, freshman Lindsey Fitz and sophomore Laura Atzeni had the goals in Sunday’s win.  Freshman goalkeeper Taylor Roberson posted back-to-back shutouts this past weekend.  Harvey has taken over the team lead in scoring with four goals on the year.

MEN’S TENNIS:  Schreiner posted 19 singles wins at the ITA Regionals at Trinity last weekend.   Freshman Ben Enriquez led the way by advancing to the finals of B draw singles.  Also playing well were two more freshmen, Victor Martinez and Andrew Albright who each made it to the semifinals in their singles draw.  The Mountaineers also had five doubles wins.

MEN’S SOCCER:   lost to Austin, 2-0, and defeated Centenary 2-1 in double overtime.  The loss to AC was tough because the Mountaineers were the better team all day.  A first half goal by the ‘Roos forced SU to play catch up and that led to the second goal late in the contest.  On Sunday, an own goal by CC broke a four match scoreless streak and gave Schreiner an early lead.  The Gents tied the match in the second half to force OT.  At the end of the first OT, a second yellow card on freshman Brandon Anselmi forced the Mountaineers to play a man down.  With less than 30 seconds to play in the 2nd OT period, sophomore Gregg Gutierrez scored off a header to give SU the victory.

VOLLEYBALL:  Schreiner lost to UDallas (3-1) lost to #13 Colorado, 3-0, beat Centenary (3-0) and lost to Austin (3-0).   With only nine available players in their victory, SU got big results from senior Alyssa Chapman (11 kills) and freshman Delanie Cauthen (10 kills, 10 digs).  Sophomore Lauren McQueen had 6 kills and 10 digs while freshman Nichole West took team honors with 20 digs and freshman Ashley Myers had 17 assists.

WOMEN’S GOLF:  finished in 5th place at the UMHB Fall Invitational.  Three freshmen paced SU in their second round score of 320, 19 shots better than the first day.  In addition to Cox’s play, the Mountaineers got a strong 78 from freshman Lauren Leslie and an 81 from freshman Piper Gleadhill.  Cox finished 9th overall and Leslie was 13th in a field that included two top junior college programs.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY:  finished 9th at the TAMUCC Islander Splash in Corpus Christi, TX.   Junior Jose Bernal led the way again and was 45th overall while junior Danny Gonzales was second on the team and in 47th.  Next across the finish line was freshman Nash Opperman in 51st.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY:  although the squad didn’t have enough runners to qualify for the team standings, freshmen Cami Carrasco and Libby Flora were again the pace-setters for the Mountaineers.  Carrasco was 55th overall and Flora finished 68th in a field with Division I, II and Division III teams and individuals.
