Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
October 7, 2015

Now that we are in October, our fall sports teams are approaching the second half of their respective conference schedules.  The SU golf teams also are headed to Florida for a big event featuring many of the top teams in the country and our Women’s Basketball team is in Vancouver for a series of exhibition games.  It will be another busy weekend here headlined by our Volleyball team hosting a SCAC Divisional Tournament at the Event Center on Friday and Saturday and both soccer teams hosting SCAC opponents on Friday and Sunday.    Congratulations to sophomore Delaney Morrow for being named the SCAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week.  See below for more info on her.

Here’s a quick recap of last week’s action:

WOMEN’S SOCCER:  defeated Southwestern, 2-1, on Friday and tied Texas Lutheran, 0-0, on Sunday.  Morrow accounted for all of SU’s scoring with two goals in the big win over the Pirates.   They were her first two goals of the year.  Freshman Taylor Roberson has now had three shutouts in the past four matches but the story is really the entire SU defense.  Roberson only had three shots come here way all weekend.  With these results, the Mountaineers conclude the first half of the SCAC schedule in second place at 4-1-1 in conference play.

MEN’S SOCCER:  lost to Southwestern, 3-2, and then defeated TLU in overtime, 1-0.  The Mountaineers got goals from sophomore Andres Penaloza and Robert Hensley in the loss and Hensley got the game-winner on Sunday.  After a hard fought first 90 minutes, sophomore Gregg Gutierrez took possession of a run-out deep into the Bulldogs end of the field.  After controlling the ball he moved it to senior Cody Hollingshead who’s shot was deflected.  Hensley was in the perfect spot to redirect the ball into the net to give SU a big win.  SU is 2-5 at the mid-point of the SCAC schedule.

WOMEN’S TENNIS:  won 31 matches this past weekend at the Doc Skogman Invitational.   Leading the way for Schreiner was three doubles team who advanced to the finals of their respective flights.  Junior Kelsey Buczkowski and sophomore Katie Watts won the B flight final while senior Karyn Swink and sophomore Abby Knedlik came in runner-up in “C” flight and freshmen Kara Miller and Katie Smith did the same in “D” flight.  Smith won her flight in singles as well.

VOLLEYBALL:  went 1-3 this past weekend.  Lost three matches at the Trinity Invitational but bounced back to defeat Huston-Tillotson, 3-0, on Tuesday.  It was just the second home match of the year.  Senior Alyssa Chapman and junior Dee Bague were tops in kills with 10 each.  Sophomore Lauren McQueen and freshmen Nichole West each had 10 digs and freshman Ashley Myers had 12 assists in last night’s win.  SU hosts three teams this weekend – all from the SCAC.

MEN’S TENNIS:  collected 15 wins during the weekend at the Doc Skogman Invitational.  Freshman Juan Ortiz won his singles flight (“J”) while sophomore Coby Velez came in second in the same flight.  Freshman Tiger Davila finished third in “I” flight and teamed with Ortiz to win E doubles.
