Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
October 15, 2015

It will be a quiet weekend on campus as our volleyball team is off and our soccer teams are on the road.   Congratulations to both senior Phil Stewart and junior Kaycee Bankert for each being named SCAC Golfer of the Week.  Each had an outstanding result at the Golfweek Invitational where most of the top teams and players competed.

Here’s a quick recap of last week’s action:

WOMEN’S GOLF:  finish in 9th place out of 18 teams at the GW Invitational.  Bankert was the big story.  She broke numerous school records by shooting remarkably consistent rounds of 75-74-76 to place third among 90 of the top women players in the country.  Freshman Piper Gleadhill rebounded very well from her opening round by shooting 76-78 in the final 36 holes.  Freshman Lauren Leslie went 81-80 over the same stretch to lift the Mountaineers to their best finish in this event ever.  SU is now on the verge of moving into the national top 25.

MEN’S SOCCER:  lost to #18 Colorado College, 2-0, and beat the University of Dallas, 1-0.  In the big win over UDallas, it was a penalty kick by senior Cody Hollingshead with six minutes remaining that was the difference in the contest.  The Mountaineers out-shot UD 12-9.  Junior Blake Lawson had three saves and picked up the shutout win.

VOLLEYBALL:  defeated Huston-Tillotson, 3-0, and then lost all four matches at the SCAC Cross Divisional.  In the win over HTU,  senior Alyssa Chapman and junior Dee Bague led the way with 10 kills each.  Freshman Ashley Myers had 12 assists and sophomore Lauren McQueen and freshman Nichole West tied for defensive honors with 10 digs each.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY:  juniors Jose Bernal and Danny Gonzales each again paced the squad as it finished 8th at the UIW Invitational.  Bernal was 29th in the field of NCAA Division I, II and III runners as well as NAIA programs.  Gonzales was two positions back in 31st.  Sophomore Ricky Canales was third and freshman Nash Opperman was fourth.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY:  freshman Cami Carrasco was first across the finish line again as the Mountaineers placed 8th at the UIW Invitational.  Senior Allyson Graybill, who had missed the last several meets, returned and finished second among SU runners.  Senior Shelby Spenrath ran her first race and is coming off a major knee injury and placed third, just ahead of freshman Lizzy Flora.

MEN’S GOLF:  senior Phil Stewart continued his outstanding start to the 2015-16 year with a runner-up finish at the Golfweek Invit’l.  Stewart went 69-69-74.  The final round was his first round above par all fall.  Despite his efforts, SU fell eight spots on the final day and finished just 16th in the field.  Freshmen Jason Lopez posted an opening day 73 and Jake Bell went 75-75 over his final 36 holes.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: lost 1-0 to the University of Dallas.   SU had a 7-3 shot advantage but it was still a very different result than the 4-1 road win that the Mountaineers had last month against this same UDallas team.
