Welcome back Schreiner Students, Faculty and Staff! We hope your fall semester is off to a great start.
It’s the first Mountaineer Update of the new year and three of our fall teams have already started competition as you’ll read below. This weekend features home matches on both Friday and Saturday afternoons for both Schreiner Women’s and Men’s Soccer. Also, the Schreiner Cross Country teams have their first meet this Saturday in Seguin.
Here’s a quick look back at Tuesday’s action:
WOMEN’S SOCCER: tied NAIA (scholarship) program UH-Victoria, 1-1. The Jaguars were coming off a 4-0 victory over the #19-ranked NAIA team but couldn’t get a win against the youthful Mountaineers. UHV got on the board with a goal in the first half. Sophomore Ruth Blackburn tied the match in the second half off a corner kick to the near post. The hard strike caromed off UHV defenders and into the net. The Mountaineers played tough for 110 minutes and got particularly strong performances from the back row pairing of sophomore Ashley Foster and freshmen Lindsey Fitz. Sophomore Megan Morant had three saves in 65 minutes of action.
MEN’S SOCCER: lost a hard-fought match to #6-ranked Trinity, 1-0. In the season and conference opener, Schreiner played the Tigers tough. The best scoring chance came in the first 15 minutes by sophomore Gregg Gutierrez. Some of SU’s best play came from their two goalkeepers. Junior Blake Lawson had seven saves in a well-played first 45 minutes and freshman Brandon Anselmi also was strong in the second half. Junior Chase Smith had three shots while Gutierrez and freshman Eric Batalia had two each.
VOLLEYBALL: SU lost a 3-0 contest at McMurry. The Mountaineers hung tough for the first two sets, coming up just short at 25-22, 25-18. McMurry’s depth took over in the third set to close out the match with a 25-12 score. Senior Alyssa Chapman led the way with six kills while the trio of senior Caitlin Otten, junior Dee Bague and freshman Delanie Cauthen each had four. Junior Courtney Reopelle had 12 assists and freshman Nicole West had 10 digs.
