Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
September 10, 2015

Things really go up a notch beginning this weekend when the SU women’s and men’s tennis teams jump into action for the first time in 2015-16 at the ASC Individuals.  The Schreiner men’s golf team plays in its first tournament of the year on Monday and Tuesday in Seguin.  On Friday evening, Schreiner Volleyball has its home opener in the Event Center with Sul Ross State coming to town for a 6:00 pm match.  On Saturday, Schreiner Women’s Soccer will host Sul Ross State as well in a 3:00 pm match.

Here’s a quick look back at last week’s action:

MEN’S SOCCER:  started the week with a loss to LeTourneau last Friday (2-1) but played much better in a 3-2 home win over East Texas Baptist on Saturday and a 1-0 road win at Howard Payne on Tuesday.  Sophomore Gregg Gutierrez scored twice in the win vs. ETBU and senior Cody Hollingshead scored on a penalty kick on Saturday.  In Tuesday’s win, freshmen Robert Hensley scored on a rebound off a Chase Smith corner kick that was headed towards the goal by junior Orlando Sanchez.  Junior Blake Lawson recorded the shutout while sophomore Rene Pena played well at the defensive end.

WOMEN’S SOCCER:  lost to LeTourneau, 1-0, but bounced back on Saturday with a dominating 3-0 win over ETBU.  Senior Kelcie Nesbitt started the scoring with a first half goal.  Freshman Alexis Overdiek scored her first collegiate goal in the second half and sophomore Ashley Foster added a goal off a corner kick by sophomore Delaney Morrow in the win.  Freshman Taylor Roberson came up big on a couple of ETBU chances in the second half and teamed with sophomore Megan Morant on the shutout.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY:  freshman Cami Carrasco, running her first collegiate race, was the first Schreiner harrier across the line at the TLU Invitational in Seguin on Saturday.  Carrasco ran the course in 22:59 (14th place) while senior Allyson Graybill finished second among SU runners in a time of 24:16.  Freshman Libby Flora was 19th, freshman Autumn Sanderson was 21st and senior Kaitlyn Goertz was 23rd.  Schreiner finished in third place in the first race under new head coach Phil Anderson.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY:  sophomore Ricky Canales helped lead SU to a fourth place finish at the TLU Invitational on Saturday in hot, humid conditions.  Canales ran the course in 19:10 (16th)  while junior Jose Bernal just 22 seconds back in 18th place.  Freshman Logan Miles also eclipsed the 20 minute mark.  Freshman Nash Opperman was 25th followed by junior David Gonzales, freshman Edgar Guillen and freshman Brock Sanders.

VOLLEYBALL:  SU came up just short in four matches at the Austin College Invitational in Sherman last weekend, losing to Linfield, Sul Ross State, McMurry and Macalester.  All match scores were 3-0 but the Mountaineers were close to a set win on several occasions.  Senior Alyssa Chapman led the team in kills in both Saturday matches and had double-digit production in that area both times finishing with 12 kills against McM and 10 against Macalester.
