Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
April 7, 2016

For most of the spring teams, we are in the closing period of conference play over the next 2-3 weekends.  Positioning for the possibility of playing in the SCAC championship is taking place in both softball and baseball where the weekend games have a little extra on the line.  Congratulations to freshmen Kolby Kitchens of Schreiner Baseball on being named SCAC Pitcher of the Week.  More on his performance below.

Here’s a quick recap of last week’s action:

MEN’S TENNIS:  went 1-1 last week, losing at Southwestern (8-1) and defeating Austin College (5-4).   The win over AC was memorable as everything (again) came down to the final match and senior Christian Casillas does what he does best.  Close the deal.  His 7-5, 7-5 win at #6 singles was the point that won the match.  But SU also got wins at #1 (sophomores Nick Pena and Dayton Hancock) and #2 (sophomore Isaac Vasquez and freshman Josh Newman) doubles and then Pena earned another point at #1 singles in a three-set thriller.  Senior Josh Ramirez also won his match at #4.

WOMEN’S TENNIS:  went 1-1 last week, losing to Southwestern (8-1) and defeating AC (5-4).  This isn’t a misprint.  They had the same results as the men on both days.   In the win, the #2 doubles (senior Kelsey Buczkowski and sophomore Katie Watts) and #3 doubles (senior Karyn Swink and sophomore Abby Knedlik) earned points as did Swink in singles play (#2 singles).  Buczkowski also was successful in her singles match (#4) with freshman Katie Smith earning the decisive point with a three-set squeeker at #6, 7-6, 3-6, 7-5 to clinch the victory.

MEN’S GOLF:  finished in 6th place out of 12 teams at the West Region Invitational.  The men shot 304 in the first round for fifth place, but fell back to sixth with a 312 in the second round.  A closing score of 299 kept them in that slot at the finish.  Senior Phil Stewart got better every round, posting scores of 77-74-73 to finish 6th overall.  Freshman Jason Lopez shot 76-78-71 to earn a top 10 result.  He would have finished two shots better but accidentally signed for a higher score than he shot in the second round.

WOMEN’S GOLF:  finished 9th at the NCAA D-III National Championship Preview.  SU had a slow start in round one, shooting 345 to fall back to 10th place out of 13 teams.  A second round of 336 moved the Mountaineers up one slot.  Junior Kaycee Bankert carded 82-81 for 12th place individually.  Freshman Kena Cox shot 87-85 while sophomore Marissa Fallis and freshman Lauren Leslie were one shot behind Cox.

SOFTBALL:  went 2-2 at Centenary in SCAC play and then lost a doubleheader vs NAIA (scholarship) Houston-Victoria on Tuesday.  SU won the second game of each doubleheader with the Ladies of CC.  Sophomore Jess Vrana was particularly strong and effective over the weekend.   She and sophomore Lori Espinoza each picked up wins in games where each gave up two earned runs.  Vrana’s came in the finale, 5-3 win, while Espinoza’s was an eight-inning affair that resulted in a 6-4 win.  Sophomores Sydney Christopher and Samantha Cordon had the hot bats for the Mountaineers in the series.

BASEBALL:  went 1-4 on the weekend but the win was memorable as Kitchen led SU to a 2-1 victory over the nation’s top-ranked team.  Unfortunately, SU did fair as well in the first two games of the series and also came up short in a non-conference doubleheader with Huston-Tillotson on Wednesday.  Scores of that doubleheader were 3-2 and 4-3 and each ended up as a walk-off win for the Rams.
