Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
April 15, 2016

I apologize for sending this out a bit later in the week than usual.  The weather forecast for the next several days has things changing on nearly a daily basis.  The information below is the current schedule of events.  If you go on the Athletics website, please know that it is currently unavailable for us to update so the contest dates and times may not be accurate.

Before getting into our update of last week’s events and the schedule for the next couple of days, congratulations to sophomore Nick Pena of Schreiner Men’s Tennis for being named SCAC Player of the Week.

As you’ll see, this is the final weekend (including Senior Day for SU Baseball) for home contests for several of our sports teams.  Our golf teams will (hopefully) compete for the SCAC Championship early next week and our tennis team will be getting ready to host the SCAC Championship Tournament a week from tomorrow here on campus and at the HEB city courts as well.

Here’s a quick recap of last week’s action:

MEN’S TENNIS:  went 1-0 last week, winning a close contest with TLU, 5-4.  In the match, the men won two of three doubles contests but fell behind after the first two singles outcomes went in TLU’s favor.  Pena, who’d teamed with sophomore Dayton Hancock at #1 doubles for a win earlier in the match, took a crucial three set win, 6-0, 0-6, 7-6 (1) to turn the tide and then senior Josh Ramirez and Hancock closed out the match with wins in their singles battles.  The men are on pace to have their best season since 2001 and are 12-3 overall and 3-1 in the SCAC.

SOFTBALL:  went 2-2 against Southwestern last weekend, losing the first game of both Saturday’s and Sunday’s doubleheaders before rallying in the second game for wins.   In the second game on Saturday, the score was tied 6-6 in the bottom of the 10th inning when freshman Alyssa Maki delivered the game-winning walkoff hit that scored junior Sam Hernandez for a 7-6 victory.   In Sunday’s win, three runs in the first spotted SU with the lead and the Mountaineers held off a Pirate rally in the closing innings.  Sophomore Lori Espinoza earned the win and sophomore Jess Vrana came in the seventh to get the final two outs and earned the save.

BASEBALL:  went 1-2 on the weekend.  Schreiner built a 7-0 lead in the opener only to see it go away on a seven-run fifth by the University of Dallas, ultimately resulting in a 10-7 loss.  The Mountaineers rebounded with a strong 6-2 win that actually took two days to complete.  Sophomore Montana Hammack pitched very well through seven innings and had SU in front 3-1 when rains came in the bottom of the eighth to cause the game to be suspended until the following day.  The Crusaders got a run in the eighth but SU put up three runs in the ninth to give sophomore reliever Payton Stanford breathing room and he closed the door for the win.

WOMEN’S TENNIS:  went 0-1 last weekend, losing a tough match (5-4) to Texas Lutheran.  A slow start in doubles got SU into an early hole that the squad could not recover from.  Seniors Karyn Swink and Kelsey Buczkowski did their best to get the win.  Swink and interim doubles partner (sophomore Abby Knedlik was not available for doubles play) freshman Katie Smith posted an 8-2 win and Buczkowski won her singles match.  SU also got wins in singles from Knedlik and junior Camila Anguiano.  Schreiner is 10-6 on the season and 2-2 in the conference.
