Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
February 11, 2016

We are now in that crossover part of the spring when our winter and spring sports are both in season.  Both basketball teams have three remaining home games to close out the regular season.  Two are this weekend.  Our tennis teams are playing on the Cree Tennis Courts this afternoon against Hardin-Simmons and play two matches tomorrow and another two on Saturday.  All here on campus.   Congratulations to senior Kelsie Jackson for being named the SCAC Player-of-the-Week.  See more below in women’s basketball on her weekend.

Here’s a quick recap of last week’s action:

WOMEN’S TENNIS:  won the Schreiner Invitational.  The women compiled a record of 25-3 overall record in singles and doubles to breeze to the title over four other teams.  Senior Kelsey Buczkowski, junior Camila Anguiano, sophomores Abby Knedlik and Katie Watts and freshman Katie Smith all went undefeated in their singles matches and the doubles teams in flights 2, 3 and 4 also won all but one match during the weekend.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL:  defeated Southwestern on the road, 69-55, and then lost at Texas Lutheran, 65-55.  Jackson was terrific during the weekend, averaging 24 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.   Junior Sabriyyah Fennell went for a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds on Saturday.  The Mountaineers are now 7-4 in the SCAC and in a battle for a top seed at the conference tournament later this month.

MEN’S TENNIS:  finished third out of five teams at the Schreiner Invitational and beat the only other D-III team in the field.  Sophomore Dayton Hancock went undefeated in singles and doubles play (partnered with freshman Ricky Puente).  Senior Josh Ramirez advanced to the finals of flight 4 singles while freshman Hoanh Le placed third at flight #3.  In doubles, sophomore Nick Pena and freshman Josh Newman finished in a three-way tie for first at #1 doubles.

MEN’S GOLF:  finished 8th out of 11 teams at the James Litz Memorial hosted by Incarnate Word.  Schreiner was one of only two non-scholarship teams in the field.  Freshman Jason Lopez posted the low score for the first (76) and third rounds (73) and placed 21st overall.  Senior Phil Stewart rebounded from a slow start to shoot 73 in the second round and was tied with Lopez overall.

BASEBALL:  lost three games to open the season at Sul Ross State.  Scores were 13-8, 2-0, 12-6.  Several pitches performed well, including sophomore Payton Stanford, freshman Caleb Allen and sophomore Chris Martinez.  On the offensive side, SU got home runs from sophomores Sam Pistrui and Quinton Volovar and a three-run triple from senior JC Kruczkowski.

MEN’S BASKETBALL:  lost to Southwestern, 92-89, and to Texas Lutheran, 81-70.   Sophomore Blake Kelley led the team in the loss to the Pirates with 18 points.  On Saturday, junior Jared Thompson had 17 points.

SOFTBALL:  lost all four games this weekend.  At Howard Payne, SU fell by scores of 8-0 and 5-4.  On Saturday at Hardin-Simmons, the Mountaineers were defeated 8-0 and 14-0.  In the 5-4 loss, freshman Alyssa Maki had a pair of hits including a home run and sophomores Kasey Tieken and Lori Espinoza also had two hits.
