February 17, 2016
Before I get into this week’s information, I do want to alert the Schreiner Community to a special event at our home basketball games on Saturday. Not only will it be Senior Day for several soon-to-be graduates but it will also be a “Gray Out” for support of brain cancer research and those with the disease. Kaitlyn Goertz, one of our seniors playing her final home game on Saturday, lost her father to brain cancer and February 20th will mark 5 years since his passing. His legacy lives on through Kaitlyn and every day she carries herself with his memory.
Kaitlyn, along with the support of both basketball teams, would like to bring awareness by passing out t-shirts at the game and will have prizes to have raffled off. All proceeds will be put towards cancer research. The games are at 4:00 pm (men’s game) and 6:00 pm (women’s) so please come out and support the Mountaineers and brain cancer research in the process.
Here is a wrap up of last week’s events:
MEN’S TENNIS - went 5-0 during a busy weekend of matches. Defeated Hardin-Simmons (5-4), Sul Ross State (6-3), Centenary (9-0), Ozarks (9-0) and Howard Payne (7-2). The biggest win was the first match against HSU. The #2 doubles team of senior Christian Casillas and freshman Ryan New and #3 team of sophomore Dayton Hancock and freshman Ricky Puente each won as did freshmen Josh Newman (#2 singles), Hoanh Le (#3 singles) and Hancock (#6 singles) to give SU the emotional win.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL – went 2-0 last weekend with home wins over Centenary (78-55) and Colorado College (75-60). Freshman Alina Hilliard led the team by scoring 14 points in each game. On Saturday, she scored those 14 points in only seven minutes of action. The Mountaineers are currently 9-4 in SCAC play and are in a battle for seeding for next week’s SCAC Tournament. SU can finish as high as the #2 seed or as low as the #4 seed depending on this weekend’s games. The nine wins ties the school record (NCAA era) for conference wins in a season. It is also the third straight year that SU has won 9 games in the SCAC.
MEN’S BASKETBALL - went 2-0 this weekend, defeating Centenary in overtime 86-80 and beating Colorado College, 78-62. After a very rough patch through a large part of the conference schedule, the Mountaineers got a pair of must-win victories to keep their playoff hopes alive. Freshman Josh Bashford averaged 16 points per game and senior Christian Pena and junior Jared Thompson each averaged 15 points. Pena also averaged 10.5 rebounds. This weekend is a win and you are in (SCAC Tournament) situation for the men.
WOMEN’S TENNIS - went 4-1 this weekend. The only loss was to Hardin-Simmons (6-3). All the other wins (SRSU, Centenary, Ozarks and HPU) were by identical 9-0 sweeps. Junior Alex Wheeler has settled into the #1 singles role and was very strong. Senior Karyn Swink is #2, with either junior Camila Anguiano or sophomore Abby Knedlik playing #3. Sophomore Katie Watts is playing #5 and either senior Kelcey Buczkowski or freshman Kara Miller has been playing #6. Anguiano and Miller are teaming at #1 doubles, with Buczkowski/Watts at #2 and Swink/Knedlik at #3.
BASEBALL - went 1-2 this weekend. After a heart-breaking walk off (5-4) loss to Howard Payne on Friday, SU bounced back with an 8-6 win in the finale on Saturday. Freshman Caleb Allen was solid in his Friday start, going 5-2/3 innings. Freshman Derek Gonzales pitched well all weekend. Sophomore Dillon Brown got SU off to a great start in the finale, going 4-2/3 innings and giving the Mountaineers a lead. In that win, senior Marco Carreon had three hits and sophomore Quinton Volovar had three RBI including his second home run of the young season.
