Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
March 9, 2016

We enter Spring Break with all of SU’s spring sports teams heading out onto the road this weekend and into next week.   We hope everyone has a safe week, wherever you may be (going).

Here’s a quick recap of last week’s action:

MEN’S TENNIS:  went 1-0 last weekend.  Defeated regionally-ranked UMHB, 5-4, at the Cree Tennis Center.  The guys got a win at #3 doubles as the team of sophomore Dayton Hancock and freshman Ricky Puente kept their perfect record intact.  Freshman Hoanh Le continued to impress with his win at #3 singles.  Senior Josh Ramirez, Hancock and senior Christian Casillas came up big to rally the Mountaineers by winning the final three singles matches.

WOMEN’S TENNIS:  went 1-0 last weekend, sweeping Mary Hardin-Baylor, 9-0.  After a couple of losses the week prior, the women got back to their dominating ways by crushing the Cru.  Senior Karyn Swink, junior Camila Anguiano and sophomores Abby Knedlik and Katie Watts all won both of their matches.  Freshman Katie Smith stepped in at #2 doubles to team with Watts to knock off their competitors, 8-4.

SOFTBALL:  swept a doubleheader from Southwestern Assemblies of God, 5-4 and 9-3, on Saturday.   SU continues to improve and showed that last weekend.  Sophomore Koral Riggs had six hits on the day and scored three runs.    Freshman Alyssa Maki went 4-for-5 in the series.   Junior Sarah Worrell also had four hits for the Mountaineers.  Both pitchers, sophomore Lori Espinoza and Jess Vrana, pitched complete games for wins.

BASEBALL:  went 2-2 last weekend.  Won two out of three games with Southwestern and then lost a single game against DeSales yesterday, 3-2.  The men again got strong pitching throughout most of the weekend and yesterday.  In Friday’s 4-3 win, freshman Caleb Allen went all nine innings and senior Marco Carreon drove in the game winning walk-off run in the bottom of the ninth.   In Saturday’s 8-6 win, SU took the lead with a run in the seventh and an insurance run in the eighth and then senior Charlie Stewart came in in the 9th to record a key save.
