Raise Record $8,761.14 for Charity!
Student-Athlete Advisory Committees
from the 15 American Southwest
Conference campuses combined to
raise a record $8,761.14 for local
community organizations in the third
annual “Make a Change in 14 Days”
loose coin collection project.
Schreiner University's SAAC improved
900% in monies raised from $100 last
year to over $900 this year
from last year and finished fourth
overall among the 15 schools.
By far, it was the biggest
improvement, in percentage terms,
among all ASC schools.
Fifteen different organizations
received support through the local
campus fundraising efforts held from
January 26-February 7.
Schreiner presented it's gift to the
Big Brothers Big Sisters of
Kerrville (Texas) in a presentation
between games of it's women's/men's
basketball doubleheader last
Thursday night.
“The student-athletes of the
American Southwest Conference
continue to display a willingness
and enthusiastic spirit to be
involved in supporting organizations
within their communities,” ASC
Commissioner Amy Carlton said.
In the three years of the
conference-wide community service
campaign, nearly $20,000 has been
raised to benefit 31 different
charitable organizations in ASC
campus communities. The 2009 total
bettered last year’s record by
$622.26.
“I am impressed by this year’s
record-setting level of support for
the conference-wide community
service project,” added Carlton.
The two-week SAAC event is also
designed as a challenge among the
ASC member campuses and is scheduled
during the turn of the conference
Division basketball schedule.
The SU Women's Basketball team, led
by sophomore Samantha Rawlinson, was
the top team contributors to the
total, raising $308. The SU
Baseball team, led by junior Abel
Lora, finished second and raised
just shy of $205. The
Mountaineer Volleyball team, led by
senior Marissa Stearns, raised $106.
Nine of SU's 13 teams participated
in the undertaking.
Congratulations to each of you (SAAC
representatives)! I am proud of all
your efforts and results in our 2009
ASC "Make a Change Challenge". By
raising $901.10, you have proven
your leadership abilities and have
helped SU's reputation that we are
quality student-athletes on and off
the sports field/floor," said SU
Men's Basketball head coach and SAAC
advisor Drew Miller.
