HSU Gets
Offensive in Sweep of Mountaineers
Schreiner
scored 14 runs in a four-game series but host
Hardin-Simmons did better as the Cowgirls swept
the series. Scores were 11-3, 8-4, 10-0
and 15-7. The series started slowly for
the Mountaineers as HSU scored 9 runs in the
first inning of the series opener - aided by
four SU errors. Although Schreiner closed
the gap to 9-3 in the sixth, HSU closed out the
game with two runs.
In the second game on Friday, the Mountaineers
took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the third but
the home team scored twice to take a lead they
wouldn't relinquish. Schreiner closed the
gap to 5-4 in the top of the sixth but the
Cowgirls added three in the bottom of the inning
to put the game out of reach.
In the first game on Saturday, HSU's ace, Arin
Spence threw a two-hitter as Hardin-Simmons
(12-9, 5-3 in ASC) broke open a 4-0 game with
six runs in the fourth. In the series
finale, Schreiner (3-16, 1-7 in ASC) took a 6-0
lead into the bottom of the third inning.
HSU got one run in the third and the
Mountaineers countered with one in the fourth.
Trailing 7-1, the Cowgirls brought in Spence who
shutout SU the rest of the way and HSU's offense
took over late to get the win and sweep.
Offensively, Lyndsie Travis led the way with
five hits over the weekend, including her third
home run. Candi Witte had four hits and
Megan Eichman (including her first home run) and
Amanda Martinez each had three hits. |
