Softball Pounds St. Scholastica for DH Sweep

Schreiner swept its second straight doubleheader, and had a relatively easy time doing it, beating visiting St. Scholastica (MN) by scores of 9-1 and 11-4.

In the opening game, it took only one batter for SU (4-2) to take a lead it won't relinquish.  Senior Megan Eichman led of the bottom of the first inning with her first home run, a line shot over center field.  For all intents and purposes, the Mountaineers put the game away in the bottom of the second with five more runs.  Eichman came through again with a triple and went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and three runs scored in the game.  Junior Tara Gonzales also had two hits, including 2 doubles and 3 RBI.  Freshman Becca Hay (3-1) pitched a complete game, scattering six hits, striking out 9 and allowing only one run.  She also had two hits to help her own cause.

In the second game, Schreiner had more of a struggle early but put the Saints (0-5) away late.  SU scored early on junior Sarah Trevino's solo home run and had a 2-0 lead entering the third inning.  Three Schreiner errors in the third, led to 3 runs and St. Scholastica had the lead, 3-2.  The Mountaineers retook the lead in the bottom of the inning, 4-3, but the Saints tied it in the top of the fifth.

Junior Lyndsie Travis took matters into her own hands, hitting a two-run home run, her third of the season, to give SU all the runs it needed.  Freshman Courtnie Dulaney added the clinchers when she hit a pinch hit double with the bases loaded to make it 9-4.  Schreiner added two runs in the sixth to make the final score.  Junior Patsy Toman (1-1) overcame five SU errors to pick up her first win of the year, allowing three earned runs on eight hits.  Hay, Travis and Trevino all had two hits in the game.
