SU Softball
Rallies
for Split vs. HSU in ASC Opener
Schreiner rallied in the nightcap, scoring four
runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat
visiting Hardin-Simmons for a split of their
series opening doubleheader. SU won the
game 5-3 but lost the first game 3-2.
On Thursday, the Mountaineers (6-8, 1-1 in ASC)
found out that two key players were lost for the
series but junior starting pitcher Patsy Toman
and her teammates played solid in the face of
the adversity.
In the first game, Schreiner scored two runs in
the third inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Junior Tara Gonzales and freshman Marla
Jendrusch accounted for the RBIs. The
Cowgirls (7-5, 1-1 in ASC) rallied against Toman
to score two runs in the top of the sixth
inning. The tie breaking run scored when
Schreiner had a player in a rundown.
Before the final out of the inning could be
made, HSU scored the go-ahead run and the
Mountaineers could not get the equalizer.
In the second game, Hardin-Simmons and SU traded
runs in the third and then HSU added solo runs
in both the fifth and sixth inning. Much
like the first game, the tie was broken when HSU
attempted to make play at second base.
While this was going on, Schreiner scored on the
play and added another run. Senior Megan
Eichman had three hits in four at-bats in the
nightcap and scored two runs to lead Schreiner.
Toman was solid in both games. She pitched
two complete games getting both the win and
loss. In 14 innings of work, she allowed
four earned runs, 13 hits and struck out eight.
Junior Tara Gonzales had two hits in each game. |
