Offense Erupts
in Second Game as SU Earns Split
Schreiner Softball rebounded from a 9-2 loss in
the first game, to score a 10-5 win in the
nightcap and earn a split of their doubleheader
with visiting Howard Payne. SU (3-7 in
ASC) scored one run in the first, three in the
third and two more in the fourth to take a 6-0
lead. Just when the Mountaineers thought
it would be a route, HPU (1-7 in ASC) rallied
with five runs in the next two innings.
Leading only 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth,
Schreiner scored four times to put the game out
of reach. In the sixth, Schreiner quickly
had two outs with no one on base. Freshman
Erica Hillard singled to start the two-out
rally. Junior Sarah Trevino walked and
then freshman Marla Jendrusch singled, driving
in Hillard. Junior Tara Gonzales then
delivered the knockout shot, a triple that
scored two more. Gonzales then scored on a
passed ball to complete the scoring. SU's
top five batters in the order had all 9 hits
between them.
In the first game, Howard Payne scored eight
runs in the first four innings to take control
of the game. They hammered 16 hits in the
game and were never threatened.
Junior Patsy Toman
picked up the win in the second game, and
pitched complete games in both halves of the
doubleheader. Five of HPU's runs in the
doubleheader were the result of Schreiner
errors. |
