Late Homers
Power HPU to Sweep
Howard
Payne University used late home runs in each
game to break ties as the Jackets swept a
doubleheader at Schreiner, 4-2 and 7-6.
In the first game on Saturday, Schreiner (3-9 in
ASC) erased a 2-0 deficit in the fifth inning.
A based-loaded walk by junior Patsy Toman and
RBI single by junior Autumn Vara tied the score
at 2-2. It stayed that way going into the
top of the seventh when HPU's Ashley Silva hit a
two-run home run and the Jackets (3-4 in ASC)
had a 4-2 win.
In the second game, SU errors gave Howard Payne
3-0 lead in the first. The Mountaineers
scored two runs in the first and added four more
over the next two innings to take a 6-3 lead.
Howard Payne rallied to even the score in the
sixth.
Again, a home was the deciding run. This
time, Cory Lee hit a solo shot in the top of the
sixth to break the tie and win, 7-6.
Vara led Schreiner's offense with four hits on
the day. Vara, junior Tara Gonzales and
freshman Erika Hillard each had two RBI. |
