SU Ends Season
with TLU Split; Rises to Fourth in ASC West
The
Schreiner Softball team came within one out of
completing another sweep of TLU, but had to
settle for a split of the doubleheader in the
final series for both teams. Schreiner won
the first game, 2-0, behind junior Patsy Toman's
second shutout in a day, but lost 4-3 in the
finale as the Lady Bulldogs scored three runs in
the bottom of the seventh. Still, SU
(10-14 in ASC) ended its season with a strong
run (winning 7 of their last 8 games) that moved
the team from sixth to fourth in the ASC West
standings. SU was picked to finish
second-to-last in the coaches' preseason poll.
In the first game, Toman scattered six Texas
Lutheran hits while striking out four in the
complete game effort. Freshman Marla
Jendrusch and junior Tara Gonzales each had two
hits and scored a run to pace the Schreiner
offense. Going into the fifth inning
though, neither team had scored. That
changed when Gonzales ripped a one-out single
and Toman followed with a single of her own.
Gonzales scored the go-ahead (and game-winning)
run on a TLU error later in the inning.
Jendrusch scored an insurance run in the seventh
off an RBI single by Gonzales.
In the second game, the Mountaineers didn't
delay in taking the lead. Jendrusch
doubled in her first at-bat and scored sophomore
Lindsay Rutkowski to take a quick 1-0 lead.
TLU (6-18 in ASC) tied the game in the fourth
with an unearned run but SU answered with single
runs in the sixth and seventh to go ahead 3-1.
In the seventh, TLU used three singles and took
advantage of an SU error to rally and win the
game.
The 10 wins in ASC West play is the most for SU
Softball since at least 2003 and is a four game
improvement over head coach Don Green's first
season. With only one senior (Megan
Eichman) and another strong recruiting class
expected, look for the Mountaineers to be a team
to contend in 2009. |
