SU Rallies for 4 Runs in 8th to Win, 8-7; Takes Two More Games on Day #2

Schreiner Softball kept up its winning ways with a 6-0 win over Ozarks in the morning and a thrilling 8-7 come-from-behind win over Mississippi in the afternoon game on day #2 of the ASC First Pitch Tournament.  Schreiner (7-2) finished the two day tournament with a 3-1 record against ASC East opponents.

In the first game of the day, SU senior Patsy Toman (3-1) pitched a complete game four hit shutout as the Mountaineers were never threatened.  Schreiner scored two runs in the first inning and never looked back.  They added two more in the fourth and another two runs in the sixth to complete the scoring.  Seniors Sarah Trevino and Lyndsie Travis, sophomore Marla Jendrusch and freshman Rachel Herzog all had three hits in the dominating performance over Ozarks (0-5).

In the second game vs. Mississippi (6-2), it was the Choctaws who got the early lead.  MC scored twice in the first and got another run in the second to go up 3-0 vs. freshman Becca Hay (4-1), but SU scored four times in the bottom of the second to take the lead.  Mississippi tied the game in the fourth and the two teams went to extra innings.

That's when the game got really interesting.  After an erroneous umpire ruling created confusion and forced the inning to start over, Mississippi used that confusion to score three times.  In the bottom of the eighth though, Schreiner regrouped, scored three runs themselves and had the bases loaded.  MC walked in the winning run allowing SU to take three of four games vs. the always rugged ASC East competition.  Travis and Jendrusch continued their hot hitting with three more hits in the second game to pace the SU attack.

The 7-2 record is far-and-away the best start for Schreiner in many years.  After the team was picked in the preseason polls (by fellow conference coaches) to finish 7th out of 8 ASC West teams, the Mountaineers seem intent to make a statement this year and are off to a great start proving that.  The competition doesn't get easier as SU begins ASC West play next weekend before heading to Arizona during spring break to play several top national small college teams.
