ETBU Sends Schreiner Home from ASC Tournament,
4-0
Photo: Freshman Ashley Bouthout gets ready
to run vs. Louisiana College on Thursday.
The
nation's top-ranked team, East Texas Baptist,
held Schreiner to two hits in a 4-0 win that
ended the Mountaineers ASC Tournament run after
two games.
Senior Sarah Trevino had both hits for SU which
ended its season with a 26-15 record. The
Mountaineers can still hold their heads very
high, knowing that they set school records for
both wins in a season (26) and wins in the ASC
(15). Schreiner had the toughest draw
imaginable during its two game appearance,
facing both the nation's #3 and #1 teams on
consecutive days. Still, SU did a solid
job against two of the nation's best teams, but
just couldn't muster enough offense.
After a scoreless first inning, ETBU, which was
the "road" team in this game, took the lead for
good with two runs in the top of the second.
The Lady Tigers got a leadoff single by Dani
Miller and a double by Erin Jones off SU starter
Patsy Toman (14-5). Michelle Graves loaded
the bases with an infield single. After
the SU defense got back-to-back outs on force
outs at the plate, Brooke Martin singled to
score two for the 2-0 lead.
ETBU added unearned runs in both the fourth and
fifth innings. Schreiner was only able to
get two hits, both by senior Sarah Trevino,
against ETBU starter Ayrika Henderson.
Henderson had 10 strikeouts in the shutout win
and only walked one Mountaineer in her seven
innings of work. Toman did well minimizing
the impact of 13 Lady Tiger hits and only
allowed the two earned runs in her seven innings
of work. She struck out four and walked
one.
The game marked the end of the careers of five
Schreiner seniors. Lyndsie Travis finished
the season with .381 average, 10 homers and 45
RBI and was an offensive leader in several ASC
categories. Tara Gonzales was one of the
ASC's top hitters with a .393 average, six
homers, 42 RBI, scored 42 runs and had 53 hits.
Trevino had a .364 average with 38 RBI.
Toman was SU's most successful pitcher in '09
with her 14 wins and a 3.70 ERA. Autumn
Vara was the fifth senior and batted .210 this
year and made great improvements in her
defensive game during her career. |
