While playing fastpitch, Don also returned to
school to get his Masters degree. In 1996,
he graduated from University of Tennessee -
Chattanooga with a Masters of Education.
With degree in hand, he returned to Lamar
Community College as the assistant baseball
coach and was in that
capacity for one season when he was named the
first head coach for Lamar Softball. That
fledgling program improved quickly and the 1998
team earned a national ranking that got as high
as #6 in the nation as Don
earned Region IX Coach-of-the-Year. During
his down time, Don continued to compete in fastpitch, this time for the Colorado Rage
(Men's A), and that team finished the season
ranked #22
in the country. In 1999,
he was hired to start the Softball program at
Odessa (TX) College. Odessa is now
recognized as one of the top juco programs in
the nation.
He is married to wife Carrie,
who works in the medical profession and the
couple lives on a ranch in Utopia.
