Schreiner
Picked Third in ASC
Preseason Poll
(8/29/07) East
Texas Baptist University and
University of Texas at
Dallas have been predicted
to do exactly what they did
in 2006 – share the American
Southwest Conference East
Division title. Texas
Lutheran University,
meanwhile, has been picked
to repeat its accomplishment
of a West Division crown
after a vote of the league’s
head coaches and sports
information directors, the
ASC office announced on
Wednesday.
East Texas
Baptist and Texas-Dallas
each totaled 63 points in
the annual preseason poll,
but ETBU head coach Lyndsay
Mashe’s Lady Tigers received
the first-place vote edge
over UTD head coach Marci
Sanders’ Comets, 7-5. The
two clubs, which meet up in
conference play on Sept. 22
(Richardson, TX) and October
26 (Marshall, TX), combined
for all the available
top-spot picks.
ETBU led the
ASC in hitting percentage
(.215) last year, while UTD
was tops in service aces
(2.32) and assists per game
(12.98). Both had a 15-2
division record.
University
of Texas at Tyler, which
becomes eligible for
postseason play after
serving as an NCAA
provisional the last four
seasons, totaled 108 points
to come in third – which
would be the final spot for
the ASC Championship
Tournament. University of
Mary Hardin-Baylor (34
points) was fourth, followed
by Mississippi College (25)
and LeTourneau University
(17) to round out the East.
Texas
Lutheran totaled 95 points
and 11 of the possible 14
first place votes to land
the favorite spot in the
West Division. Head coach
Tiffany Davis’ Bulldogs went
15-3 against division
competition in 2006 and
hosted the ASC tournament.
TLU was ranked in the ASC’s
top 3 for hitting percentage
(.213), kills per game
(14.65), assists per game
(12.73) and opponent hitting
percentage (.159).
Defending
ASC champion Hardin-Simmons
University was picked to
finish second in the West
after totaling 84 points.
New head coach Sabrina
Bingham’s club picked up the
remaining three first place
votes. Schreiner University
landed in the third spot
with 61 points.
Sul Ross
State (45 points) was
fourth, followed by McMurry
University (40), Howard
Payne University (38) and
Concordia University Texas
(29) to round out the West.
ASC
volleyball teams begin the
2007 season as early as Aug.
31. The six-team ASC
tournament is slated for
November 2-3 at the site of
the East Division champion
with an automatic berth into
the NCAA Division III
Women’s Volleyball
Championship on the line.
