White, Schreiner VB Ready to "Let it Out" This Fall

The Schreiner Women’s Volleyball program has high expectations for 2008.  Phillip White, who was an assistant coach at the University of Southern California and head coach at Los Alamitos High School, is looking forward to establishing a highly successful program within the American Southwest Conference (ASC).

“At our first team meeting,” said Coach White, “it was clear that we all have the same united goal – playing at the highest level of volleyball and representing our university passionately.”  He added, “We know we have the talent.  Now, we have to add the fervent desire.”  The Mountaineers look to be a force in the conference and have great optimism because the squad returns most of its 2007 roster.  The returners are led by the intimidating middle duo of 5’11” middle blocker, Tiffany Miller (JR, San Antonio Churchill) and 6’1” middle blocker Xandria White (SR, San Antonio MacArthur) who both earned second team All-ASC honors last fall.  Miller was third in the league in kills (4.52/game) and fourth in hitting percentage (.335) and White was sixth in the ASC in blocks (1.07/game) and seventh in kills (3.57/game).

Others to watch during this fall are 5’7” outside hitter Marissa Stearns (SR, Center Point), 6’3” middle blocker Caitlin Gayle (SO, Bandera) and 5’3” defensive specialist Brittany Alvillar (JR, Missouri City).

White takes over a program that was 8-10 (11-14 overall) in 2007, which resulted in a fifth place in the ASC West Division.  In 2006, the Mountaineers finished 10-8 in the ASC West and tied for third place in the division.  The team lost the tiebreaker for the final spot in the ASC Championship Tournament that year.

“With a ‘Let It Out’ mentality the team looks to improve on our record of 2007,” says Coach White.  “I am expecting our dynamic offense to be a direct result of our strong defense.”

The team is committed to raising their intensity level and work ethic in the gym.  It’s a recipe White believes will result in wins throughout the season and the cornerstone principles for the type of program he expects to have at Schreiner.  The team is looking forward to the support of the University, community and student body to cheer them on as they “Let It Out!”
