Comeback Falls Just Short as SU Falls to
Unbeaten East Texas Baptist
ASC East Division
favorite East Texas Baptist survived a furious
rally by Schreiner and remained undefeated in
conference play with a 3-2 win.
ETBU (15-5, 7-0 in ASC), which is getting votes
nationally and is a perennial fixture in the ASC
Tournament, won the first two games of the
match, but only by the scores of 25-19 and
25-23. Any thoughts they had that upstart
Schreiner would go away quickly were dashed as
the Mountaineers (7-9, 4-4 in ASC) took the next
two games by identical 25-22 scores in each.
In decisive game 5, ETBU edged ahead and was
able to hold off SU, 15-10 to take the
hard-fought match. It will be interesting
to see how much the match took out of Schreiner
as the team had to play Mississippi College
later Friday evening and has another match on
Saturday morning.
Tiffany Miller had a big match, tallying a
personal season-high 18 kills and .324 attack
percentage. Caitlin Gayle, the ASC's
leader in attack percentage, was a target for
ETBU's defense and was held to a still-solid 13
kills but was well off in attack percentage.
Xandria White had 11 kills and Marissa Stearns
9. Malorie Westerholm had 47 assists and
Kaycee Westberry and Brittany Alvillar share
defensive honors with 15 digs each.
One area where the Mountaineers shined and
dominated was in blocks as SU had 15.5 to only 6
for East Texas Baptist. |
